It is this unquenchable thirst for touching base with people that has ensured the steady growth and popularity of blogging. Of course, there are other ways to reach out to other people online, and avenues such as email and message boards remain in widespread use. However, blogging has got both of those beat with regard to instantaneous and spontaneous exchange. Instant messaging offers an even more instantaneous means of communication to be sure, but it isn't really ideally suited to lengthy discourse. Blogging truly has come a long way since its earliest incarnations as a sort of online diary or journal.
